Manningham Club 2nd XI Defeated by Old Rivals

Not a great match for the 2’s as we went down by 5 wickets to our old rivals North Balwyn. After winning the toss and being sent in our top order failed to fire with the score 3/7 at one stage. Luckily Lachie Evans for the second week in a row steered us away from disaster with a fantastic 81. The middle order couldn’t get going once again and at tea we were about 7/80. Rushy joined Lachie and put on a fifty run stand then Frenchy came in and made a valuable 24 before a mix up saw Lachie run out. A score of 171 was always going to be tough to defend.

Week 2 got off to a slow start with Frenchy and struggling to get his line right. Day picked up the first 2 wickets with Rushy bowling an extended spell down the other end. Tristan and Rushy bowled unchanged from drinks to tea keeping things tight but only one wicket fell to have North Balwyn 3 down at tea. These two kept bowling after tea but unfortunately the wheels fell off the Marcellin fielding bus with 5 or 6 dropped catches making it almost impossible to defend a low score. The North Balwyn batsmen had their fair share of luck and with our assistance they got the runs 5 wickets down followed by Jim Carey taking his first scalp for the club thanks to a Frenchy chest mark in the deep on the final ball.

In the end Tristan took 3 wickets, Day 2, Carey 1, and Rushy extremely unlucky not to grab a few for himself. Burwood next week for the 2’s. We need to bat through the 80 overs and improve our catching to give ourselves the best chance to get the season going.
