A disappointing end to the season for the MOCCC 2nd XI saw us go down to old rivals St. Kevin’s by 107 runs.
Day 1 started ok with Mira and Danny both picking up a wicket to have them 2/38, however a 77 run partnership that included a controversial ‘bump ball’ gave St. Kev’s the upper hand and left us struggling for the remainder of the game. St. Kevin’s put on the best batting performance we’ve faced all year as all batsmen contributed with their opener Cullinan anchoring the innings. Memorable ‘Highlights’ from the innings include Fallys misfield/run out, Skull keeping up his tradition of dropping a catch each match, and Mira having to catch a taxi to Trinity to retrieve one of Frenchy’s half volleys that our old mate Hopgood had no trouble picking. In the end they made 267 with 2 wickets to Day and French, and one each to Mirabella, Massarotti and Evans with his third delivery of the year.
Day 2 started with the frustratingly frequent occurrence of our batsmen electing not to offer a shot to deliveries destined for the stumps and we were in trouble early. Fally, Mazz and Jim Carey in his farewell match all got starts and looked good but no one was able to go on and get a big score. French (42) and Watty (21*) both batted really well at the end of our innings putting on 40 to get some respectability in the score but we were a long way off in the end.
A pretty disappointing season on-field with just 3 wins, 6 losses and 2 draws. Dropped catches, batting collapses and the fact no one made a ton for the year aren’t a great way to go about defending a premiership, but I think we all still had a fair amount of fun. Big thanks to Dan Coloe for putting up with us all during the year.
